It Loves Me Not is an independent AI literacy initiative that provides people with the information they need to engage with AI systems responsibly.

Advances in artificial intelligence are making AI systems increasingly conversational, personalized, and socially engaging — shifting how people relate to them from productivity tools toward more socially oriented interactions. This shift is happening faster than public understanding of these technologies. As AI becomes more embedded in daily life, understanding how it shapes our perception and behavior isn't just relevant to AI literacy, it's essential to well-being, safety, and responsible use.

About

How It Started

It Loves Me Not was born out of the Center for AI Safety, Ethics, and Society course, where participants are encouraged to explore and develop projects that contribute to AI safety. It Loves Me Not looks at how evolving interactions with AI shape human perception and behavior.

The idea of It Loves Me Not was inspired by the flower petal game, where the person playing the game tries to predict romantic affection. The player pulls a petal at a time, alternating between the phrases “s/he loves me" and "s/he loves me not." While the metaphor is playful, it strongly resonates with the uncertainties around human-AI relationships and raises a bigger question: what kind of relationship do we want with intelligent systems?

About Jackquelyn "Jac" Topacio

Jac began her career in the private sector as a creative professional in media and advertising, specializing in strategic and visual communications. She later transitioned into the nonprofit sector as a communications specialist, working with organizations including the United Nations and international NGOs.

Her interest in artificial intelligence deepened as a result of her recent work with the United Nations Pact for the Future in New York in 2024, which included the Global Digital Compact, an international framework addressing digital governance and the responsible development of artificial intelligence. This experience sparked a deeper curiosity about how AI is shaping society—and how people can engage with these systems more thoughtfully and responsibly.

It Loves Me Not is her contribution to AI safety — helping people better understand and navigate their relationship with AI.
